This looks really cool, I like the idea of building a shell to use on top of Hyprland. I was going to test it out but did not like how it overwrites the Hyprland config file. It would be cool if this could also function as a drop in into a already existing config without changing anything. I get if that is not what you are going for, just wanted to throw it out there and get your input.

Hi, thanks! The script simply appends a source line to hyprland.conf to enable the shortcuts and other functionalities.

You don’t need to delete your existing configuration for it to work. If you ever want to remove it, just delete the lines added to hyprland.conf and remove ~/.config/Ax-Shell.

Additionally, the script creates backup files for any modified files, so you can easily restore them by removing the .bak extension. This process will be automated soon.

I also considered sourcing the config using hyprctl, but reloading your Hyprland config would unload Ax-Shell's settings.

Finally, you’re free to modify the code as needed—that’s why I designed it this way instead of packaging it, so users can customize it easily.

I agree. sourcing a seperate config file is by far the best way, the one issue is that the sourced config is overwritten from a script and this means that editing the shells hypr config (to disable blur, edit rounding. etc) is slightly more difficult.

Actually, whatever you want to override you can state after the line sourcing Ax-Shell.
Hyprland applies the configs in order. So, for example, if you want to change rounding, you can do this:

source = ~/.config/Ax-Shell/config/hypr/ax-shell.conf

# Overrides
decoration {
    rounding = 10
}

Oh thats smart thanks. imma just move the ax-shell source line up to the top of my config then and revert the changes i made to config.py.
will this cause lag issues on startup tho from parameters (blur particularly) being applied then removed?

Not at all, the config is fully loaded then applied. You could state rounding a thousand times but it will be applied just once.

I got a question, does the shell supports 2 monitors? can it be displayed in 2 monitors?
I was tinkering with the files and saw the hyprland_monitor.py has functions to get connected monitor details. only found it used with popup_window_v2.py
is there a way to achieve that functionality?

Hi, I’m not sure if it works with dual monitors—it might only appear on the primary one. Unfortunately, I only have one monitor, so I can't test it myself. Right now, I’m focused on finishing the first release, but I’ll look into it afterward.

This is quite the shell. Awesome job. I have it installed all works great the bar seems to be elongated in the North South direction. Is there a way to reign that in. The clock module is the only module that did not get elongated. See attached screenshot.

Also, is there anything special to get cava to work? Thanks

When I start fresh the notch is against the top of the screen. No gap. Over time it has a gap. The workspace indicators also get longer.

This is pretty interesting, but I can't reproduce at all. The bar shouldn't just "move" on it's own.

Thank you for looking into it. I got cava working and as of today no issue with the bar. I did a clean boot this morning, using Ax as my daily driver and I really like Ax-Shell. Keep up the great work.

Interesting, seems like you are using the thin version of the icons. How did you install? The only font file for the icons is the default one in this repo.
Could you show me the contents inside ~/.fonts/tabler-icons?

Ah, makes sense. I deleted all those, you literally downloaded the .zip file the minute that commit was online lol.
Install normally, it will delete those fonts and apply the correct one.

Is it possible to have a key-bind that triggers a minimalist mode like how the brightness and performance metric icons disappear when the dashboard or overview is open?

It’s possible, but you might want to wait until the config editor is finished. You'll be able to disable individual modules and buttons.

I mention this because everything that hides when the dashboard and overview open is not only to prevent overlap (when possible) but also to reduce redundancy, as those modules are also available in the dashboard.

Hi! Wonderful looking shell, I'm having one small problem in that it seems that your waybar is not installed with the installation script and I cannot find the config file anywhere. I might be wrong in thinking that its waybar, but whatever it is could you slide the config? (It looks amazing). Thanks.

Hi, thanks! There's no waybar. Everything is made from scratch.
How did you install? If you used the curl command from the README and still don't see Ax-Shell, it might be PyGObject breaking layers again.

Install the downgrade package and run sudo downgrade python-gobject, then select 3.50.0-2. This will fix it and you can run the installer again.
