It would be helpful too to know how to access data. ESA data is incredibly hard to understand how to get it. Is the access restrict to WMS?

I mean, do we really have to do some sort of this to get the data?

I once downloaded some of these tiles. I think you can get data by installing and using the aws-client:

$ pip install awscli

List data with:

$ aws s3 ls --no-sign-request s3://copernicus-dem-30m/  # 30 meter

$ aws s3 ls --no-sign-request s3://copernicus-dem-90m/  # 90 meter

Unfortunately, I don't remember how you actually download the data.

I guess I have to thank Copernicus to make fill so stupid that I can't find how to EASILY download their free data.

I do note, with the help of ChatGPT, that the COP30 dataset is about 10-20 times larger than than the SRTM dataset and Copernicus seems to want to know who is using the data by requiring user registration prior to download which might makes things a little stickier despite the provision in the license document allowing distribution. Would they really be happy with another organization hosting the entire dataset?
I would think the first thing to do if someone has the time, would be to build/validate support for the data(and metadata) format(maybe GeoTIFF?) and then leave it to the user to obtain the appropriate tiles for their region of study. Perhaps a template script could be built to assist with that, but it would need the appropriate access token/info to be provided by the user.

Does that sound about right?

ChatGPT is GMT ignorant 😄 We host SRTM1 that should be almost the same size as COP30 (30 vs 33 meters). And we have clever recipes to store originals in very compressed jepg2k files. It can be done, just requires work. And the way Copernicus tortures users makes me wish that we host it like the other datasets we do.
