Custom domain for website

Ideally, our website should have a custom domain rather than https://natrongithub.github.io/, which is fine and functional but I think a custom domain, such as one in the list below, would be preferred:

• https://natron.graphics/
• https://natronvfx.com/ (already owned)
• https://natron.fr/ (not sure if we own this one)
• https://natron.app/
• https://natron.net/
• https://natron.io/
• https://natron.dev/
• https://natron.art/

I am pretty sure we already own https://natronvfx.com; I don't know about https://natron.fr and to my knowledge none of the other domains are owned by us. Should we do this? Any thoughts/suggestions?

Hi guys, just a heads up, domain name will require money per year and may break the SEO.
Since the project is in hibernation spending money yearly in it would be a bad idea.

I think https://natronvfx.com is already owned by @rodlie and it already redirects to Natron's website so it should be relatively easy to set it as custom domain in github pages?

I think it would be an extra obligation to @rodlie , specially in this bad economy.
We started this git to ensure to have a free alternative. So far it's working well.
I would say not to depend on paid system when free is available. Being resourceful would be a good strategy.

A custom domain will not break the .github.io link, it will always redirect if a domain is set in GitHub Pages.

@cgvirus Again, I'm pretty sure rodlie already owns the domain, and it already redirects to our site. This is afaik not giving him anything additional to pay for. It's just a matter of whether he's willing and whether we think using that domain on non-monetary general grounds is a reasonable idea. @rodlie please correct me if I'm wrong about the details though.

Yes, I own natronvfx.com and natronvfx.org. I think natron.fr is still owned by @devernay (or he has access to it)?

I registered natronvfx.(com/org) several years ago to avoid "domain sharks". I can transfer ownership if wanted.

If natron.fr is still an option I think we should continue (start) using it.

@cgvirus I have no problems paying for the domain(s), or continue doing so if wanted.

Nothing against France but I do think it would be a bit odd for a .fr domain to be used on a site with no French translation 🙃

Maintaining localized content is also a lot of extra overhead... :/

I agree on that, it's just that natron.fr has history, it was the official domain after we moved from natron.inria.fr.

I'm for whatever as long as it's a "real" domain :) (not github.io something)

For what it's worth, out of the current pool my vote would be for natronvfx.org. I know the .fr has some history behind it but it's been many years since it was used and (hopefully) it's slowly transitioning to become more of a global effort! :)

So are we okay with going with natronvfx.org? The setup is not that hard afaik (it's mostly just adding a CNAME file to be copied over as a static asset, configuring DNS, and then entering the custom domain in repository settings). I just hope there is general agreement on this?
