I successfully modded my PS1 controller ports (with a huge amount of help from this community) - it was challenging, but a great learning experience.

The entire mod is contained to the controller port module, so it could be made into a drop-in mod like Laser Bear's GC solution (by someone more talented than myself). Or a QSB that sits over the input pins.
