Current behavior:

When trying to build --prod I get memory heap error

I already rolled back so not relevant to the issue but here is my info.

Same problem on Windows. I was never able to get a prod build to complete on 2.0.2. Rolling back to 1.3.12 resolves the issue.

Hello all, could you all provide a repo we could use to reproduce this issue? I have not run into this issue either on my surface book running the latest build of windows 10 or my macbook.

@jgw96 I won't be able to do that without providing access to our private repo, and I don't think it's practical to produce a failing example, as I'm pretty certain that it comes down to the size of the project.

FWIW, I'm also working on a Surface Book with the latest build of Windows 10. The project contains just over fifty pages, and at least that many smaller components.

My project is very large too, I can't give you access to our repo but you can try this one it has 200 empty components might help reproduce on your machine. I remember seeing this repo used to debug another issue Webpack is too slow.

@jgw96 I've done some research on this issue now that I've had a little spare time, and it seems to come down to Webpack's ModuleConcatenationPlugin not playing well with large projects. I don't know that there's anything the Ionic team can do about this, as it seems we're at the mercy of Webpack again.

However, I do have a workaround for you and @CooleyGit which has just produced a working --prod build for me. The most common workaround I've seen is to just hand Node more memory. To do that with Ionic's build script, I changed the ionic:build task in package.json to the following:

"ionic:build": "node --max-old-space-size=8192 ./node_modules/@ionic/app-scripts/bin/ionic-app-scripts.js build"

Hopefully others find some success with that. I've only tested it on Windows, but seeing as Windows has been more temperamental in the past, I would guess that it also works on macOS and Linux. Additionally, I did these tests with ionic-angular@3.6.0 and @ionic/app-scripts@2.1.3.

I still have had no luck getting a prod build out in any version past 3.5.3. Over the weekend I updated to 3.6 everything is fine on serve but build --prod fails with heap error... I tried the above suggestion and many others with no luck... What else can I do to get ionic updated and built?

This seems to have been fixed in Webpack 3.9.0.
(specific fix: webpack/webpack#6001)

Would be nice if ionic-app-scripts dependencies could be updated to support that version.
