I really only use pandoc for conversion from markdown to html and latex.

I often want to edit the tables tex source that come out of a pandoc to latex conversion into something simpler or different. I am not particularly enamoured with longtable. (Right now, I am trying to debug the caption/longtable interaction that throws up a 'none' counter problem...yikes.)

I think most of longtable is hardcoded into pandoc, but various AI LLMs are claiming it is not. I presume they are hallucinating. Am I correct?

The counter problem has been fixed in the last release.

Yes, the use of longtable is hardcoded.
But you can find a long issue with various workarounds if you search issues for longtable.
