The custom shader portion of the new functionality will be covered in a separate pull request.
Edit: This PR now closes #10991 by superseding it, since it incorporates its changes. Thanks @QbieShay for the initial PR 🙂

@clayjohn I've now incorporated #10991 in this PR, while taking the review comments into account. Can you check if the notes about compositor support and depth_test_default in Forward+ are correct now?
