ES6 module distribution build and typescript typing information.

Two main changes to support more modern projects built with typescript and ESM modules:

• Created an additional build step to generate a ESM build, with the extension .esm.js.
• Created an index.d.ts file at the root of the package to provide typing information.
  Neither of these changes should break any existing code working against the package.
